Some New Equivalences of Anderson’s Paving Conjectures

We prove some new equivalences of Anderson’s paving conjectures. Among these are a paving conjecture for positive matrices and for strictly upper triangular matrices.

Interlacing families II:Mixed characteristic polynomials and the Kadison–Singer problem

We use the method of interlacing polynomials introduced in our previous article to prove two theorems known to imply a positive solution to the Kadison–Singer problem. The first is Weaver’s conjecture KS2, which is known to imply Kadison–Singer via a projection paving conjecture of Akemann and Anderson. The second is a formulation due to Casazza et al. of Anderson’s original paving conjecture(s...

A pr 2 01 4 Interlacing Families II : Mixed Characteristic Polynomials and The Kadison - Singer Problem ∗

We use the method of interlacing families of polynomials introduced in [MSS13] to prove two theorems known to imply a positive solution to the Kadison–Singer problem. The first is Weaver’s conjecture KS2 [Wea04], which is known to imply Kadison–Singer via a projection paving conjecture of Akemann and Anderson [AA91]. The second is a formulation due to Casazza, et al., [CEKP07] of Anderson’s ori...

Rota's Basis Conjecture for Paving Matroids

Rota conjectured that, given n disjoint bases of a rank-n matroid M , there are n disjoint transversals of these bases that are all bases of M . We prove a stronger statement for the class of paving matroids.

The Kadison-singer Problem and the Uncertainty Principle

We compare and contrast the Kadison-Singer problem to the Uncertainty Principle via exponential frames. Our results suggest that the KadisonSinger problem, if true, is in a sense a stronger version of the Uncertainty Principle. In 1959, Kadison and Singer answered in the negative [13] the well known question of unique pure state extensions: can a pure state on a C∗ subalgebra of B(H) be extende...
